Pre-Symposium Isadora Duncan tour of San Francisco, CA
Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. (approximately 3 hours)

Hosts: MaryRuth Hammond & Marie Carstens
Register: email info@duncansymposium.com with Pre-Conference Tour Registration in the subject line.

Itinerary and Description:
This exciting step back in time begins at ODC, 351 Shotwell street in San Francisco, CA, at 1 p.m. Set your devices to the golden age using the SF map app on your smartphone or tablet. Together we travel by bus for a twenty minute ride down Market street to the San Francisco Performing Arts Library. We arrive and meet a library archivist who has culled together photographs, news clippings, and program material from the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s. Depending on the number of attendees we will have 30-60 minutes at the library before venturing on foot to Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral where Angela Isadora Duncan was christened on October 13th of 1877. This Cathedral, aside from being part of Isadora’s journey, is a landmark in San Francisco, notably as a refuge during the 1906 earthquake and ensuing fire. Journeying onward, we will end at Isadora Duncan Lane where there is a marker of her birthplace. We will spend time restoring the plaque that bears her name and create a keepsake of the plaque itself with a brass rubbing.

Cost: The tour fee of $25 will cover bus travel from ODC to the Performing Arts Library, and museum donation. Initial transit cards will be handled by the group hosts. This can be paid via PayPal to info@duncansymposium.com.

*Please note, the tour ends at Isadora Duncan Lane. Those who would like to return via bus or the cable car will need to purchase a ticket for the return. The high volume of tourists during August increases the wait for the cable car could be extensive and therefore needs to be left for the return trip.

This tour begins sharply at 1 p.m. to ensure arrival at the Performing Arts Library at 1:30 p.m. and lasts to approximately 4 p.m. Travel time via bus/walking is roughly 45 minutes.

Transportation information: SFMT single transit fare: $2.50 US (adults) Cable Car $7.00 US

Post Conference Excursion to China Beach
Sunday, August 13th, 2017 from 10am-12pm
Join us in getting up close and personal to the wave that inspired Isadora’s dance.  In the spirit of Isadora’s universal gesture, we will come together at the end of Resurgence: Bridging Time and Techniques. Dancing to the sounds of the waves, led by MaryBeth Hraniotis, we will ritualize and commemorate our time together. Readings from Isadora’s Art of the Dance, will be the scaffolding for our structured improvisation. We chose China Beach for its views and amenities. There is beach access by ramp or stairs, with a bathhouse/restrooms onsite. Bring a towel, water bottle, bathing suit and tunic.  We recommend getting to the beach by car, either taxi or ride share.

We will start promptly at 10 am and end at 12pm but please come as your schedule allows, entrances and exits per the spirit of the wave!
